We are happy to announce that we now stock zip top bags! We hope that these new bags will help some of our customers to keep their logs dry over the winter season. The new zip top bags are available in the form of dumpy bags and barrow bags.
We know that several of our customers store their kiln dried hardwood logs outside and do not have log stores. This poses an issue of how to keep the logs dry over the winter. Most customers in this situation cover their logs with a tarpaulin but this can be tricky when it is very windy and messy when there has been a lot of rain or snow gathering on the top. That is why we approached our supplier to see if they could come up with a solution and we are pleased to say that they have!
As a small business in Fife we believe that it is important to support other local businesses. We source all our products including our bags locally. Our bags come from a family run business in Dundee. It would have been cheaper for us to buy our bags from China and have them shipped over to our firewood shed in Kingskettle but we know that this would not be beneficial to our local economy nor would it be very environmentally friendly. Imagine the carbon footprint if our bags came from the other side of the world!
Another benefit of sourcing our bags locally is that we can approach our supplier with questions whenever the need arises and get a fast response. The zip top bags are more costly that normal open top dumpy bags and barrow bags and that means that we need to charge and additional £5 for a dumpy bag and £3 for a barrow bag.
The zip top bags mean that our customers don’t need to rush to stack their logs away if it’s raining or snowing. It actually means that they don’t need to bother stacking them away at all! All our wood is premium kiln dried hardwood which means that it is bone dry therefore it won’t become mouldy if left in the bag. The only issue is having the space to store the bags outside but if you have plenty of room then why spend time stacking the logs away when you could just zip and grab?
We are currently working with our supplier to come up with a way to recycle our old bags that have been damaged on the base. We try to reuse our bags as much as possible but we can’t reuse bags that have holes in the bottom as it is unsafe when loading the bags onto the truck with the forklift. The damaged bags are currently put into the green plastic recycling. We are hoping that moving forward these damaged bags can be restitched on the bottom and then reused. This could help to keep the cost of the bags down as well as providing less or zero waste.
